Throughout the months of February, March, and April, potholes are a frequent issue due to weather fluctuations. According to MassDOT, this is the season when potholes are most likely to occur, making driving in New England problematic.
Between October 1, 2022, and January 10, 2023, 4,493 potholes were repaired by the state’s transportation agency. The Deputy Head of Operations and Maintenance for MASSDOT Highway Division, Scott Wilson, claims that despite the number appearing to be below average, they are prepared for the next pothole season.
Wilson recognized that independent contractors would be responsible for fixing the potholes, and they were making sure that the contractors were organized and ready to go. Potholes are formed by water that seeps through gaps in the top layer of pavement, freezes, then thaws, and are more prevalent on roads with heavier traffic.
