The New Multimillion-Dollar Complex at Boston Logan International Airport Opened with Little Fanfare.

Four new gates at Terminal E of Boston’s Logan International Airport have had a gentle opening. Logan International Airport in Boston has increased the size of its international Terminal E by adding four more gates. This enhanced Terminal E features amenities and includes a Delta Sky Club, enriching the experience for travelers at the airport.

Quiet soft opening

Yesterday, Logan International Airport discreetly unveiled an expansion of its international terminal, featuring an exterior adorned in “Boston Red.” This extension is a response to the initial Volpe International Terminal E, which commenced operations in 1974 with a total of 12 gates catering to 10 international airlines and approximately 1.5 million annual passengers.

However, the landscape has evolved significantly by 2022, where the terminal still maintains 12 gates, yet accommodates 34 airlines and serves 6.45 million passengers annually, as outlined in an April 14th report by Boston.com. Even as early as 2017, as illustrated in the image below, Logan International Airport remained a prominent hub for airlines.

With the addition of at least four new gates, the airport can now provide improved services to an international hub. Here’s a preview from CBS Boston:

A complete grand opening is not scheduled until the project reaches full completion. The aim is for the autumn season, once the concessions have been fully developed.

Federal assistance

In a statement dated July 7, 2022, the Massachusetts delegation to the US Congress highlighted that Boston’s Logan International Airport was allocated $62 million in funding for the fiscal year 2022 by the Federal Aviation Administration. This funding was allocated not only to enhance the roadways connecting Terminals A & C to E but also to support the rehabilitation and renovation of the original Terminal E facilities, which were established in 1974.

Specifically, the allocated funds will be utilized to upgrade various aspects, including the replacement of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. Moreover, there will be an expansion of the baggage claim and curbside area to cater to the gate expansions, alongside the revitalization of the current ticket counter area, gates, and jet bridges. These investments have resulted in enhanced disability access and a reduction in energy consumption.

Quoting Senator Ed Markey from the statement:

Freshly established Delta Sky Club

The recently inaugurated Delta Sky Club by Gate E13 of Delta Air Lines operates daily, except on Wednesdays, from 1:30 PM to 10:00 PM. On Wednesdays, its operational hours extend from 1:30 PM to 10:15 PM. This modern Delta Sky Club provides amenities such as WiFi, power outlets, and a bar, and even includes shower facilities. Visitors can access comprehensive information and indulge in preview photos as well.

Distinctive Red Paint

Per information from the Boston.com report, the recently introduced Terminal E is enveloped in a one-of-a-kind red hue. This distinct red paint, which was patented by the terminal renovation’s architect, Luis Vidal, following collaboration with Switzerland’s Monopol Colors lab, has a unique property: the shade of redshifts when illuminated by light. Notably, Terminal E stands as Boston’s dedicated international airport terminal.
